Wedding Rings and Wedding Bands
Wedding rings are more than just a piece of jewellery. They are a symbolic representation of the vows you take to love and cherish each other for life. At Secrets Shhh, we offer an array of beautifully designed wedding rings crafted from the highest quality materials, so you can be sure we have the perfect wedding ring for you and your loved one.
When shopping for your wedding rings, you may have come across the terms 'wedding ring' and 'wedding band' - are there any differences between the two? Generally, a wedding ring features intricate designs, diamonds, or other precious stones.
Wedding bands are much simpler in design, just a single band of precious metal. They may be engraved with meaningful messages, such as your partner's name or wedding date. Whichever option you choose for yourself and your partner, wearing these rings is a beautiful expression of love and dedication.
We offer an extensive collection of yellow, white and rose gold wedding rings crafted from the finest 10 and 14-carat golds. If you are looking for a wedding ring with an extra special touch of elegance, we have a range of wedding rings featuring our signature diamond simulants. Exquisite in design and quality, these offer the same sparkle and shine as a real diamond at an affordable price.
The diamond simulants featured in our wedding rings are available in various cuts.
Questions About Wedding Rings or Bands?
Who typically buys the wedding rings?
Traditionally, each partner buys a wedding ring for the other. These days, however, it’s common for couples to buy the rings together and split the cost – especially if they already have shared finances. But you may want to each buy your own rings, or your families may want to contribute to the cost. There is also the question of whether you buy the rings as a surprise for each other or choose them together. The benefit of choosing together is that you can be sure that you are both getting something that you will be happy to wear for many years to come, and you may want to choose complementary styles. There are absolutely no hard and fast rules. It’s your special day and you should do whatever works for you as a couple. When you visit your local Secrets Shhh boutique, our team can introduce you to our full range of wedding rings and help you find your perfect match.
How do you clean a wedding ring?
When you’re wearing an engagement ring or a wedding ring every day, it’s inevitable that dirt and grime will build up over time. This will be most noticeable with diamond rings as the stones will start to look a bit dull, whereas a simple wedding band won’t need cleaning quite as often. However, it’s important to have your ring checked by your jeweller regularlyand to care for your rings so that they don’t become tarnished or damaged. We recommend that you clean your ring every couple of weeks, and take the opportunity to check for any loosening or chips. When cleaning, avoid any harsh chemicals and just use warm, soapy water. Let the ring soak for a few minutes, and then use a soft toothbrush or small, soft brush to remove any remaining grime. Rinse the ring and gently dry with a soft cloth or leave to air dry. You could also use a polishing cloth to buff up the band and/or diamond. At Secrets Shhh, we sell a range of specialist jewellery cleaning products that will gently restore your pieces to their former glory. We also offer professional jewellery cleaning and repair services in store, so if you notice any problems with your ring please don’t hesitate to bring it in for our team to take a look. We recommend that you bring your Secrets jewellery in every six months for a complimentry clean and inspection.
What is a wedding band?
Wedding bands are the rings that are exchanged during the wedding ceremony as a symbol of the marriage. This is not the same as the engagement ring, which tends to be presented at the time of the proposal - or soon after - as a sign that you intend to marry your partner. Traditionally, there is only one engagement ring, worn by the person who has accepted the proposal, but two wedding bands (one each). From the wedding onwards, the wedding band is usually worn on the ring finger of the left hand (alongside the engagement ring if you have one). Wedding bands may be more simple and understated than engagement rings, but it is entirely up to you! From an elegant band to a diamond encrusted eternity ring, we have a huge collection to choose from at Secrets Shhh.
Are mens and womens wedding ring sizes different?
No, women’s and men’s ring sizing uses the same scale, so you don’t have to specify. The difference is that men’s hands and fingers tend to be bigger, on average, so more rings for men are sold in bigger sizes. This applies to the finger size as well as the width of the band itself. Women tend to choose a thinner band, between 1 and 4mm, while men often prefer a band that is 5-8mm thick. This is because a thinner band can look more elegant on a smaller, more slender finger. A thicker band might look bulky or unbalanced, and could become annoying to wear every day. As ever, though, it comes down to personal preference and comfort. You can visit your local Secrets Shhh boutique to find out your ring size, for the perfect fit, and we have a custom order programme to accommodate almost all finger sizes.
Can you engrave a wedding band?
Yes, a wedding band can be engraved with a short message, initials, a date, or some other personalisation to make it even more special and unique to you. Some people choose to have their rings engraved before the wedding, while others decide to add a personal touch after many years of marriage. The tradition of engraving or inscribing wedding rings dates as far back as Ancient Rome and Egypt, where a ring might feature a religious word, symbol or poem. Initially, engraving was performed by hand, but modern techniques include machine or laser engraving, which are more precise and defined. This gives you even more scope when choosing your inscription. The cost will vary, depending on factors like the amount of engraving required and the intricacy of your design, as well as the technique and the materials involved. It’s also worth noting that, while an engraved personalisation can add immeasurable value to the ring from your point of view, it’s likely to lower the value of the piece in general.
